Believe it or not, the monokini was the most scandalous of swimsuits when it was introduced by fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich, in 1964. The swimsuit then consisted of bikini bottoms with straps that went up over the shoulders leaving the chest open and bare. It was primarily used as a fashion statement and for topless sunbathing. The outrageous monokini was introduced not long after the much conservative 1950’s era. It caused quite an uproar from citizens, government officials and the church. While Gernreich sold over 3,000 suits in his first season, the design didn’t prosper for the summer seasons to come.

Today’s monokinis have similar designs but cover the chest. Some monokinis show more skin than others but for the most part we like to keep our privates private when going out in public!
